Paul Mitchell's Ullman Sails on her way to winning the Airlie Beach Race Week Regatta for the second successive year.
Congratulations to Geoff Berg and crew of AYS Indian Chief, first across the line in the 2018 Brisbane to Gladstone. The red boat has a remarkable history under three previous owners. Thanks to Kellie Morris for this great shot near the M9 on Moreton Bay not long after the start of the race.
8th Oct 2017
Exceptional boat exceptionally well sailed. An exceptional combination that has once again seen Ullman Sails (previously Mad Max and also previous holder of the title) take out the Australian Multihull Championships in a competitive fleet of twelve boats sailing on Moreton Bay.
Congratulations to skipper and crew.
May 2017
Congratulations to Alex McMillan and crew of Purple Haze for taking out the double in the Bay to Bay Race on the weekend. Purple Haze, an Essential Eight, took out the line honours and handicap trophies in the two day event held on Hervey Bay in Southern Queensland.
BARE ESSENTIALS ENOUGH TO DO THE JOB Jan.2017
Tim Pepperell's Essential 8 Trimaran Bare Essentials set a blistering pace to windward in the 2016 Boxing Day Race from Port Melbourne to Blairgowrie at the southern end of Port Philip Bay in Australia.
Owen McKenzie was competing on another multihull Shockwave. Thanks to Owen for the following report:
MAD MAX SETS THE PACE AT ARILIE AND HAMILTON ISLAND RACE WEEK 2015
Mad Max was a clear winner for boat speed at Airlie Beach Race and Hamilton Island Race Week 2015. She was first across the line in five of the seven races at Airlie and in all six races at Hamilton Island Race Week.
She also missed out on the OMR win at Airlie by just five seconds.
4th May 2015
It's another fine win for Mad Max in the Bay to Bay Race which according to skipper George Owen was "slow and frustrating".
Tony Considine has lost count of the number of times Max has won the event.
Well whatever that number; just add one more.
Another fabulous close up shot from Julie Geldard.
MAD MAX WINS INAUGURAL KING OF THE GULF REGATTA IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA 2015
Mad Max took a clean sweep of lines and OMR handicap in the inaugural King of the Gulf Regatta sailed out of Port Vincent in Spencer Gulf.
The series was conducted by the Multihull Yacht Association of South Australian. Two Farrier designed trimarans Cross Hair and Carbon Credit also contested the series.
MAD MAX IS AUSTRALIAN MULTIHULL CHAMPION 2015
Mad Max fought off strong challenge from Airplay to take out the Australian Multihull Championships sailed out of Geelong as part of the 2015 Festival of Sails.
Max also won the line honours prize with first over the line in every race.
Two Grainger trimarans Airplay and Bare Essentials took out 2nd and fourth places on OMR respectively.
COUNTESS FIRST ACROSS THE LINE IN DIVISION 2 OF CROWTHER MEMORIAL 2014
Brian Marshall and crew of Chincogan 52 Countess sailed a magnificent series to take out line honours in Division 2 of the 2014 Lock Crowther Memorial Regatta.

INDIAN CHIEF WINS CROWTHER 2014
Indian Chief lead the way around the course in the series of four races for the 2014 Lock Crowther Memorial Regatta held on Pittwater, Sydney Oct 3rd to 5th.
Darren Drew and crew put in a determined effort to take first place in Division 1 for the series on OMR, PHS, and the Line Honours Championship.
MAD MAX WINS THE 2014 BAY TO BAY
PBH, CBH, OMR and first across the line. Tony Considine's Mad Max cleaned up the trophies in the 34th Annual Bay to Bay Race sponsored by the Hervey Bay Sailing Club.
I asked Tony how many times he had won the race in Mad Max. He wasn't sure but he thought "…about 6 wins in Mad Max for both races and 3 in Max at Marly Point".
Mad Max's elapsed time was 3h. 42mins, fully one hour and twenty three minutes ahead of the second boat over the line.

MORTICIA WINS MULTIHULL NATIONALS
Congratulations to Chris Williams and crew of Seacart 30 Morticia for a convincing and well deserved win in the 2014 Australian Multihull Nationals just completed in Port Linclon in conjunction with the Lincoln Week Regatta.
Five Grainger Designs contested the series including Indian Chief (second place), APC Mad Max (fourth), Bare Essentials (fifth) and Trilogy sixth. The Nacra 36 Malice was in third place. Full results here:
http://lincolnweek.com.au/results/2014/linc/multi/SGrp19.htm
It's the first time we've posted a photo of a boat from another design office. Morticia has been giving the top OMR boats some serious competition in recent regattas with front of the fleet results both on line honours and OMR placings. It's great to see some inspired new competition in the fleet.
Thanks to Ann Clarke for the photo.

MAD MAX AND SURF TO CITY (AGAIN)
Tony Considine's Mad Max again paves the way for the rest of the fleet with a line honours win in the 21st Surf to City Yacht Race from the Gold Coast to Moreton Bay, narrowly missing an OMR handicap win by just over two minutes.
Grainger Designs still hold the Race record for the both the inshore and offshore divisions.
Flat Chat (offshore division 2002) 7 hours 10 mins.
Trilogy (inshore divsion 2009) 3 hours 43 minutes.

MAD MAX TAKES SURF TO CITY LINE HONOURS
Mad Max continued her run of line honours vicories in the Gold Coast to Brisbane inshore division of the Surf to City Race, finishing more than an hour across the line ahead of Lightwave Raider. Finish time was 6 hours 30 minutes, a relatively slow race. Dux Nuts was third across the line making it three Grainger Designs with fastest times for the course.
Nov. 2012
INDIAN CHIEF IS NATIONAL CHAMPION
Darren Drew and crew of Indian Chief sailed a magnificent series of races on Lake Macquarie to win the title of Australian National Champion 2012.
Three other Grainger Designs contested the series with APC Max second on 7 points, Turning Point 5th on 13 points and Bare Essentials in Eight Place on 27 Points.
The Nacra 36 Malice helped to demonstrate that you can have close and competitive racing under the OMR Rule between cruising boats, high performance sports multihulls, and bigger beach cat style boats. Malice took second place in the series with 7 points.
Jan 2012 SMALL TRIMARAN MAKES BIG IMPRESSION
In the 34 mile passage race from Melbourne to Geelong that opened the 2012 Festival of Sails regatta Tim Pepperell's Essential Eight trimaran Bare Essentials beat Rob Hanna's new TP52 Shogun V across the line by just under 3 minutes to be the fastest finisher in the nearly 300 strong fleet.
It must have almost been a replay of the same race in January 1986 (then known as the ANA Regatta) when the freshly launched Born Run, (the very first Grainger design), showed the fleet what a small trimaran can do against the rest of the multihull fleet and some otherwise very impressive monohull race boats that included the gun racing mono of the day Flying Colours. Tim's victory adds to a long line of race wins for Bare Essentials.

MAD MAX AGAIN IN THE SURF TO CITY
The two Grainger designed cats in the 2012 Surf to City Yacht Race took first and second places across the line. Mad Max again took line honours with a finish time just under six hours and twenty six minutes with her older sister ship following up some forty minutes later.
The race was sailed in predominantly light conditions that freshened later in the day and frustrated any hopes of the faster boats taking out the OMR trophies. To quote from the official web site:
The predicted record breaking race last weekend from Southport to Sandgate defied the predictions and only broke records for the number of anchors needing deployment to hold the boats against
the tide in the predominant doldrums.
The first half of the inshore and offshore courses was sailed in less than five knots with plenty of parking stations for the crews to have a friendly chat in the swinging East to North East to
North to Northwest wind lottery. Luckily the wind in the open parts of the bay built to 12 knots mid afternoon and some of the inshore boats at least made it home in the daylight.

TRILOGY IS AUSTRALIA'S MULTIHULL CHAMPION 2011/2012
Trilogy and Mad Max tooke the OMR and line honours Trophies respectively for the 2011 Corsair Marine/Seawind Australian Multihull Championships
Keith Glover' skippered Trilogy to an Impeccable 6 points out of six to win the Australian Multihull Championships held on Moreton Bay in Queensland from the 19th to 23rd of September.
Trilogy's perfect score was all the more impressive for the fact that the series encompassed a range of wind conditions that varied from a drifter to a 25 knots plus south easterly and included races in mid range conditions as well. Trilogy's power was aided by new sails, a canting mast and impressive crew work from Ben Kelly, Brendon Mann and Harry Bethwaite. George Owen skippered Mad Max to a line honours series win to once again demonstrate the domination of this boat/crew combination for raw boat speed.
The photo of Trilogy is from our files.
SIXTH SUCCESSIVE WINNING YEAR FOR APC MAX/MAD MAX AT MARLAY POINT
5th May 2011
There are two races on the Australian Trailer Yacht circuit that Mad Max just loves to win on line honours and she won them both again this year. They're the Bay to Bay and the Marlay Point Race which made it six years in a row for Mad Max and her predecessor APC Max. A handicap win was once again foiled when Mad Max fell into calms way ahead of the rest of the fleet, only to be caught up by the pack when the sea breeze filled in from behind. This is a predictable pattern that has robbed MM of an OMR victory on several occasions now. Mad Max very narrowly missed an OMR victory in the Queensland Multihull Championships by just one point. See earlier story.
AYS RAIDER TAKES LINE HONOURS IN THE GLADSTONE
13th April 2011
It's Australia's biggest offshore event for multihulls and a very hotly contested one. The odds are heavily stacked against a catamaran just 9.2m long taking line honours against some much larger competition.
Joel Berg demonstrated great boat speed and sailing skill to take AYS Raider first across the line just three minutes ahead of Boss racing. the win added to AYS Raider's line honours victory in the 2011 Surf to City inshore division and capped off a great season (2010/2011) for Grainger Designs on the racing circuit.

GRAINGER TRIMARANS Ist 2nd AND 3rd IN QUEENSLAND MULTIHULL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three of our better known boats on the racing circuit battled it out for first second and third placing in the 2011 Queensland Multihull Championships with the irrepressible
and now 25 year old 8m trimaran Ensign Racing Moving Finger (yes, yet another name change) taking out a fantastic win just one point ahead of Mad Max which was in turn just one point ahead of
Trilogy. A great result from three very competitive performers.

MAD MAX FASTEST AT MARLAY 2011
No surprises there but the margin was large. 5 hours 51minutes, an hour and sixteen minutes head of the second boat to finish. Max's OMR placing was third.
WANGI REGATTA 2010
Mad Max again prevailed in her relentless pursuit of lines honour placings in the 2010 APC Logisitics Multihull Regatta Hosted by the Wangi Amateur Sailing Club on the NSW Central Coast. She
crossed first over the line in all races but faced some stiff competition from the trimarans in the windy conditions.
Mad Max was disqualified from an OMR win as well as line honours in the last race because she made the fatal mistake of crossing the finish line a second time after the last race and being
disqualified. The race was finished, the crew had tidied the boat and stowed the gear and she was headed for the boat ramp. So what was the problem? Well there were two other divisions of boats
out there somewhere, yet to finish, and the race committee gave Max the thumbs down.
Thanks to Tony Considine for the photo.
22nd November 2010
The Australian National Multihull Regatta is on again at Wangi on the NSW Central Coast and we've just had an update from owner of Mad Max, Tony Considine.
It seems Mad Max demonstrated her shear speed yesterday in the Invitation Race by leading the fleet around the course, hotly pursued by the Nacra 36 which took second place.
In the first official race today Mad Max blew the tack off the jib, cut through by a sharp shackle, and sailed the whole race under main only. It didn't stop the Mad Max crew taking line honours
again. Tony reports Mad Max was sailing at 11 knots upwind and pointing higher than any other boat in the fleet.
6th October 2010
Two Grainger Designs once again dominated the lines honours results at the 2010 APC Logistics Lock Crowther Memorial Regatta sailed in Pittwater, the Hawkesbury River and Offshore from Broken Bay
in Sydney's North.
Tony Considine's Mad Max and Darren Drew's Indian Chief consistently crossed the line in first and second places respectively in all five races.
Indian Chief was second on OMR just one point behind the F28R Scud.
The series was held in challenging conditions that varied from 25 knot squalls to dead calm.
Twenty eight cats and tries contested the series held over the first weekend in October.
21st August 2010
It was a light air benefit for Grainger trimarans at the 2010 Meridian Airlie Beach Race Week , previously the Multihull Rendezvous.
Grainger Designs totally dominated the series on line honors and OMR.
Bob Thomson's 075 trimaran Sirocco took out the series under OMR with impressively consistent sailing, taking three fist placings and two seconds. One race is dropped at the end of the six race series. Rob Dean's veteran 8m trimaran Moving Finger was hot on her heels in second place with two first placings, two seconds, and a third. Two Grainger cats Cynophobe and Rum Raider performed gallantly in the adversely light airs to fill in fifth and sixth positions respectively in the handicap placings.
Dave Chittleborough's 38' Panther cat Cynophobe was four times first across the line, with Moving Finger putting on a very impressive display of boat speed to take first across the line in the other two races and backing that up with four second placings.
24th May 2010
Darren Drew's Indian Chief continued in her domination of the multihull racing circuit in Sydney with a line honours win in the two handed Pittwater to Newcastle Race on the weekend.
The race was sailed in a fresh South Easterly giving Indian Chief the opportunity to break the existing record which was established by Darren and Gary Martin five years ago on Flat Chat.
However a shattered headboard car forced Darren and Crew to sail the second half of the race under screecher alone, yet they still finished only three minutes and forty five seconds outside the record and averaged 13.6 knots for the course.
The closest competitor was the all carbon Sayer 40, Wasabi, a little over and hour behind Indian Chief.
3rd May 2010
Mad Max was fastest boat over the course on both days of racing the 2010 Bay To Bay Race. This was despite some hardware problems on the first day's racing, including both rudder shear pins breaking, forcing the crew to run downwind and replace the bolts, and the mainsail velcro clew strap letting go, breaking the outhaul as well.
Despite these delays Mad Max managed to beat Bare Essentials across the line by about five minutes with AYS Raider in 3rd position and a time well inside the race record.
On the second day in the 87km race Mad Max again dominated with boat speed at times up to 20 knots to lead across the line with a margin of around ten minutes. Their time was slowed by a glass out just off Woody Island which allowed the bulk of the fleet to catch them up, but it may still have been a new race record, we're not sure of the official times just yet.

30th March 2010
Moving Finger may be 23 years old but she hasn't lot any of her vitality. With Ben Kelly at the helm she has now added the 2010 Queensland Multihull Championships to her extensive list of race victories after taking first place on OMR in the four race series concluded on Moreton Bay on the weekend. Cut Snake was second on OMR with Bare Essentials third.
In the race for Line Honours Gordon Myers turned the tables on Moving Finger, taking first place, with Moving Finger just two points behind in second place.
28th March 2010
Indian Chief took line honours, including overall for the regatta, first on OMR and first place Performance Handicap in the multihull division of todays
Pittwater regatta which is an annual race that celebrates, this year, 104 years of yacht racing on Pittwater.
In light Southerlies the race started in near perfect conditions off the RMYC. The large fleet primarily from the Royal Motor Yacht Club and Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Clubs based in Pittwater,
Sydney enjoyed a clean start in eight knots of wind with the multis starting 10 minutes before the monohull fleet. The race was well contested with a host of local yachts competing in this
popular event.
Indian Chief, the Tony Grainger designed 9.5 meter cat owned by Sydney multihull skipper Darren Drew completed the 22 mile course in 2:23:15 and was well out in front at the finish beating its
main competition, Robin Ottowa's 9.5 meter Trimaran, Lukim Yu by 14 minutes over the line.
7th March 2010
To paraphrase Tony Considine "this year's Marlay Point Overnight Race Race was a real shocker, huge storm, torrential rain, lightning all night and no wind". Tony is the owner of the eventual race winner Mad Max and previously owned the boat that was second across the line, Indian Chief.
Mad Max took line honours with Darren Drew's Indian Chief second across the line twenty minutes behind. The line honours win for Mad Max makes it five years in row first across the line for a Grainger designed boat.
Given the conditions therre was no chance that either Indian Chief or Mad Max were going to break the record established last year by Mad Max.
18th January 2010
Three Grainger Designed Multihulls shared the fastest times in the 2010 surf to City Race held between the Gold coast and Moreton Bay.
Mad Max continued to extend her trail of line honours victories in first place with a time of six hours and one minute, followed by Gordon Myers in his trimaran Bare Essentials. Roger Overell's
Raider One Design was third across the line.
